Meet the Change Makers
Hear from a few of the key individuals making a difference and those who are benefitting from their mission.
Alinna Diaz-Porro, Teaching Artist
"Our youth are discovering artistic ways to process the world around them and use their voice to spark social change."
Alinna Diaz-Porro is a Multimedia Teaching Artist at CAW where she helps teens acquire marketable skills in digital media, graphic design and photography. Before working at CAW, she taught for and managed a non-profit art center in South Chicago called SkyART, where she found her passion for serving under-resourced communities through collaborative artmaking. In 2014, Alinna earned a BFA in Studio Art from Florida State University, where she focused on sculptural ceramics. She is also skilled at digital art, drawing, painting and photography. When Alinna is not teaching, she is a practicing artist whose commissioned and personal work examines her cultural and environmental identity.
Alex Karpa, Teaching Artist
"Our youth have used their work with CAW to articulate their thoughts on important social justice topics, to build on artistic and creative skills, and to become more capable activists and changemakers in their communities."
Alex Karpa is committed to redefining and expanding the role that creativity can play in supporting our communities. Alex began working as a Teaching Artist with Creative Art Works in 2019 and became Program Coordinator in 2020. Prior to joining CAW, she worked as an art and museum educator for the seven years. During this time, she held teaching positions with the Alexandria Archaeology Museum, Young Rembrandts, the National Museum of American Jewish History, the Rubin Museum, the Jewish Museum, South Asian Youth Action, Community Roots Charter School, Advancing the Community of Tomorrow, and the Center for Educational Innovation. Alex's love for teaching art fuels her practice as a mixed media artist and painter. Alex holds a B.A. in Anthropology from George Washington University, an M.A. in Museum Anthropology from Columbia University, and is currently working on her master’s in Art Education at City College.
Kezia King, Youth Apprentice
"I have grown as an artist and as an activist through my experiences with CAW. I definitely see myself in the future sharing my voice with the world through my art."
Brooklyn native Kezia King is 19 years old. She first worked with Creative Art Works as part of a crew that painted the mural “Momentum” for Dock 72 in Brooklyn Navy Yard. She is a committed and focused filmmaker, singer, dancer, actress, and model. Above all, she is an entrepreneur and artist. She aspires to have her films make it to the big screen while also pursuing acting on the side. Kezia graduated from Talent Unlimited High School for the Performing Arts on Manhattan's Upper East Side and plans to return to Hunter College after the pandemic subsides.
Oscar Saavedra, Youth Apprentice
"Whenever I work with CAW, I feel like the process of making art is much easier, because they value freedom of expression – it’s an environment where you can explore yourself as a person and as an artist."
Oscar Saavedra is 23 years old and was born and raised in Brooklyn. He attended the Brooklyn High School of the Arts, where he majored in fine arts and learned to paint abstractly, create chiaroscuro paintings, and work with molding. Oscar chose the path of mechanical engineering at City College of New York, and continued his studies at the University of Buffalo; however, his passion for the arts prompted him to change his major to environmental design. Oscar plans to finish two passion projects: starting an e-commerce business in accessories, and branding his clothing line. He wants to raise environmental awareness and unite people through the wonders of nature. Oscar's motto is, "Peace, love, harmony."
